Quatro – A Journey to Restore Her Vision
Age: 11 years old
Quatro's Story
Quatro is a Karen girl who was born in June 2013. Shortly after her birth, she was abandoned by her mother and found by Lerwathoo, a student at the Bamboo School. Catherine Riley Bryan, also known as Momo Cat, rescued her. On June 16th, 2013, with her uncle's permission, she was taken to the district government hospital, where doctors said nothing could be done for her eyes. Determined to help, Catherine took her to Mission Hospital in Bangkok, where Dr. Yupin, an eye specialist, performed surgery. Quatro was only ten days old at the time.

Medical Journey
June 2013: Quatro was found abandoned in a toilet bowl shortly after birth. She was rescued by Momo Cat and taken to Mission Hospital in Bangkok, where her first eye surgery was performed when she was only ten days old.
October 2022: Catherine noticed Quatro's vision was deteriorating. She was seen by a visiting ophthalmologist and was advised to seek a second opinion. Quatro was referred to Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital and subsequently to the Children's Hospital in Bangkok, where she was diagnosed with Peter's Anomaly and advised to use a prosthetic eye for her right side.
December 2022: Momo Cat consulted Dr. Kalayanee Rojanaporn, a senior eye consultant at Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok. Quatro was diagnosed with a congenital ocular anomaly, glaucoma, cataract on her left eye, and total vision loss in her right eye. She underwent a thorough examination and surgical repair under general anesthesia.
August 2023: Quatro's eye specialist at Rutnin Hospital noticed progression of her cataract, and surgery was planned for lens replacement. The specialist warned that the surgery would be complicated, with a high risk of failure or complications, but given her condition, it was necessary to proceed.
September 2023: Quatro underwent cataract surgery at Rutnin Hospital. Despite the complexity, the surgery was successful. Quatro handled the procedure well and was discharged under Catherine's care at the Bamboo School.
December 2023: Three months post-surgery, Quatro had a follow-up appointment with Dr. Duangnet, who performed a thorough eye and retina examination. The results were highly encouraging, showing excellent vision and remarkable recovery.
June 2024: Quatro's follow-up showed no further deterioration of her retina. She will continue follow-ups every six months, then annually. Cosmetic surgery for her right eye is suggested for the future, purely for cosmetic reasons.

Baby Fern – Tetralogy of Fallot
Age: 4 years old
A 4-year-old Fern’s story is one of resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. Born in the Karen ethnic territory of Myanmar in January 2022, she entered a world marked by conflict and scarce healthcare. From infancy, her parents noticed her lips and nails turning purple, her energy fading quickly, and her inability to keep up with other children—early signs of a serious heart condition. With no resources, no knowledge and no legal status in Thailand, her family could not access proper care, and her fainting episodes became part of her fragile childhood. At age four, Fern was finally diagnosed at the Children’s Hospital in Bangkok with Tetralogy of Fallot, a life-threatening congenital heart defect. Stateless and uninsured, she now lives at Bilay House Orphanage in Ratchaburi, awaiting urgent surgery that could transform her future. Her journey reflects the vulnerability of children born into poverty and displacement, and the hope that collective compassion and support can give her a chance at a healthy, normal childhood.
