Fern- The impossible heart
Age: 4 years old
Baby Fern 's Story
Fern was born in Karen ethnic territory in Myanmar, a conflict-affected region with extremely limited healthcare access. Since infancy, she has shown signs of severe congenital heart disease: persistent cyanosis (purple lips and nails), easy fatigability, and difficulty keeping up with peers.
At age one, a local health center suspected a heart condition but lacked diagnostic capacity. No treatment was available. The family, without financial resources or legal status in Thailand, struggled to access care. Their situation remained dire until a volunteer medical worker connected them to the Be Well Child Care Foundation through Pastor Bilay.
